I remember John as being very sweet, a good guy through those years that weren't always easy, and good guys were always great to have around.

I stayed in touch with John for many years after he moved to Denver, long past when he ever went to church.  He was fun, outlandish, and certainly no choir boy.  We finally stopped getting together once he moved to Ft. Collins, CO back in the 90's.  I can only hope that he eventually found a way to tame his demons.

Hi Jim  thank you for your update..I had heard of his demons...good old church of christ really put the joy in us...I am extremely shocked and grateful to have survived this long...these messages are happening too often ...

Skinny John, smiling John, not surprised at all to hear about the demons, as they are there for so many. Weird how I can just see him in my mind, from 16 or 17 years old, maybe even younger. And you are right, getting the kinds of messages about people that we're likely to see more often on this forum really saddens us, even though we know, and I'm sure John knew, none of us get out of here alive. Here's to John!

Following older brother Doug was a hard act.  John pretty much treated me like an annoying younger brother, which, all things considered, was probably not far off the mark.  He did turn me on to a lot of amazing music - BB King, Rod Stewart before anyone knew who he was, etc., etc.  Hope he found happiness. peace and grace.

I have very fond memories of John from high school.  He could always make me laugh and I remember what good friends he and Steve Flowers were.  Those two together was liking watching a comedy show!  What fun we had.   I am saddened to hear of his passing but grateful to have known him.  God bless him and his family.

Johnny, lefty roundballer a la pistol pete, Hendrix guitar, Dylan expert, very honest speaker and wit.                                    Changes and departures make us all on our own paths.  Our class was great at accepting differences and coming together more.  John was more Rolling Stones, but Joni Mitchell's 'Both Sides, Now' and her whole 'Clouds' album say a lot for love and forgiveness.  We all need these and friends as great as John Wheeler.
